Origin: Known basically throughout Western Europe. There are especially many of them in English finds.
Symbolism: The key is a very popular heraldic symbol. It may also be a reference to Saint Peter's keys. The key was often seen as a symbol that opened the gates of heaven, which referred to the spiritual aspect of pilgrimage as a path to salvation and eternal life. Pilgrims wearing the key-shaped badge could express their spiritual aspirations and hopes for admission into the Kingdom of God.
