Symbolism: Monogram of Mary. The monogram of Mary, often depicted as the letters "M" or "MR" interwoven in a variety of patterns, was a popular symbol in medieval art and on religious artifacts, including pilgrim bagnes. Monograms were believed to have protective powers, protecting the wearer from evil and misfortune. Mary was often seen as the intercessor and protector of the faithful.
