Symbolism: Medieval baggies depicting John the Baptist were popular devotional items, especially among pilgrims visiting places associated with this saint. Known as a prophet and forerunner of Jesus Christ, John the Baptist was frequently depicted in Christian iconography, and his image appeared on many medieval artifacts. They were available in sanctuaries, where the faithful could purchase them as a proof of their faith and devotion. Wearing such a badge was also intended to protect the wearer from evil and bring blessings associated with Saint John the Baptist.
